COULD YOU LEAVE YOUR CITY?
Well, we're watching the Gustav coverage on various news channels....and we occasionally ask ourselves, "Why aren't those people leaving?" and then, "Why do people ever go back"? Could you, if faced with recurrent threats of death and destruction, continue to live somewhere? I know, I know, I live in SoCal, and the BIG ONE is due anytime...actually, the BIG ONE is late, overdue, it could happen as I type this, but it doesn't occur yearly, or every several years with massive destruction. It's different. And we're relatively prepared. Could you leave your city if you lived in a situation like New Orleans? And could you make the decision to never return? Could I have done that when I lived in C-bus? Where I raised my children? It's tough....but yikes?.....

there are some questions that have answers but not easy ones and probably not ones that would ever satisfy the asker. like, why don't you get the hell out of town, or why in God's name don't you leave the S.O.B. who's beating you up.
or why do you go into Baskin-Robbins and order vanilla.
but yeah, i'd leave. i'd leave gladly. i'd probably be thinking, gee, if it hits, i hope it hits BIG. we really do need to replace the flooring in the kitchen.
HAHAAHAHAHAAHHA Oh, that's great...vanilla at Baskins Robbins...and I'm sooooo guilty of that, really. I love it that you answered a truly profound question with a light-hearted answer. It reminds me of Woody Allen, " I don't want to achieve immortality through my work, I want to achieve it by not dying."
Heck ya I would leave! Especially in this Gustav situation. . . having your house get damaged once every 100 years. .. well, that could happen wherever you may live. But, every YEAR? I just don't think it's rocket science. Now, I know first hand how in love a human can be with a city/region. But, if it's better for your family. . .well, a decision based on that has never been difficult for me. So, yes. . .I would move. . . and, ALWAYS look back with fond memories. .but, be really greatful my house isn't floating.
I suppose it could be a matter of leaving...especially if it involves children. Maybe if it was just me, I'd rethink things or it would be more difficult, but with little ones, you have to put them before sentimentality....so yea, pack it up before it floats away.
